There are hundreds of different therapies and many thousands of therapists in the UK. So, how the heck do you find the right therapist for you? At Fix My Mind, we don’t just offer hypnotherapy in London, we’ve also had therapy. Therefore, we hope this blog provides you with some help in knowing what to choose and what not to choose when selecting a therapist.
These top 4 tips are by no means exhaustive and we think if we knew then, what we know, this would have helped a lot and we hope they help you now
1. Rapport / chemistry. Do you actually like and feel that you can trust your potential therapist? You are going to be talking to them about deeply personal things and if you don’t like them, don’t see them. They can have all the qualifications in the world and if you don’t ‘connect’ with them, it could sabotage your success.
A good therapist can and should have a pleasant and firm way with you and that doesn’t mean they need to have sympathy for you, or in fact be empathetic. Put another way your therapist feeling sorry for you is not going to help you get what you want. So if being warm is likely to work for you make sure they are warm.
2. Training. Ask questions about the therapists training / qualifications & accreditation. It’s scary that people can call themselves a therapist after a weekend’s training. Would you trust that? Therefore, it’s OK to ask. I spent something like 800hrs in training!
3. Specialism. Is your therapist a specialist, or a generalist? Also ask questions about what training they have had in the specific topic you want to be treated in. I think it’s better for someone to know a lot about very little, than vice-versa. Ask questions about what specific training they have done, their success criteria, what can sets them apart from the norm.
It’s the reason why at Fix My Mind, we specialise in in focused treatment areas e.g. NLP & hypnotherapy for phobias, which you could find out more about here: https://www.fixmymind.co.uk//overcome-phobias-and-fears/
4. Success. This is the million-dollar question – ‘how successful is your treatment’. And it’s a totally fair enough question to ask. There are really two parts to the question, ‘does your treatment work?’ And, ‘how long does it take / how many sessions will I need’? By the way, run a mile from anyone offering guarantees.
The beauty of the Internet means that you can research & benchmark the suitability and possible duration of the treatment you are exploring in order to give you a guide of what to look out for. A good and specialised therapist should have a good record. And ultimately you want / need to get better and with a clear goal, you should have a clear end result.
There are ultimately only 4. reasons why therapy won’t work. The first reason is that you have chosen a poor therapist who could be using the wrong kind of treatment. The second is that the client either doesn’t believe the treatment can work. And the third main reason for the failure of therapy is that the client doesn’t really want to stop their problem. The fourth is that the therapy being used may not be suitable. By following these tips, you can help ensure you get the right result.
So, the best way to follow these tips is to ask a potential therapist for a detailed conversation before you see them. It’s your time and your money and you want to know that it works. It’s why at Fix My Mind, we offer a free 20-minute consultation for NLP & hypnotherapy in London which you can find more of here: https://www.fixmymind.co.uk//free-20-minute-consultation/
